men at work

Tree pruning?

The first day of the month is Daily Photo Theme Day, and today's theme is "men at work" For a city of its size, Zurich has such a surprisingly large amount of work being done on on any given day, that I had trouble picking just one picture. I took quite a few 'men at work' pictures between yesterday and today during my lunch break, so apparently someone thinks that there is a lot of work to be done here. Much of this work involves cleaning or the 'beautification' of the city in some way or another. To see more men hard at work in Zurich go here.

To see men (and perhaps a few women) at work in over 60 other cities around the world, follow the links below. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

Looks a little precarious though - not much support from that thin tree! Great shot.

Tree pruning indeed but how many of us have dreams of climbing into the tree too?

Ainz,
Great shot,
But there is so much more to this photo than the Men. The Streetscape and the buildings are magnificent. And the trams !! I LOVE trams, and I love this shot.

Wow! Doesn't look terribly safe, but they probably (hopefully) know what they're doing.
Perhaps the guy on the ground is specifically trained to catch his co-worker should he topple out of the tree :)

My first thought was the fireman was up on the tree rescuing a cat. :-)

Great shot! Like the other commentators, my inner child remembers what fun it is to climb high up in the tree branches.

tree surgeons we call them
or something less polite when they chop down good trees.

wow! they have really long saws in my neighborhood to do this. They stand on the ground and not in a tree to do this very task.

ming & wellspring: funny you both had the same thought. I've never actually seen someone rescue a cat from a tree--I thought that only happened in cartoons!

to all the tree climbers: yes, climbing trees is fun, and I did a lot of that when I was little, but like some people mentioned, I much prefer a tree with thicker branches, and one that does not require a ladder to get to the first branch.

slinger: long saws? can't really picture it, but it sounds dangerous too. what if the guy on the ground loses control of the really long saw? In other places I've seen guys being lifted in buckets by those tractor/truck lifty thingies (uh.. yeah...that's my very non-technical name for those things....)

m. benaut: I didn't even realize there was a tram in that shot until you mentioned it! I'm sure you’ll be seeing many more pictures of trams around here. They are everywhere and impossible to avoid—but that’s a good thing! Trams are always in the background somewhere. As for the streetscape— the street is the Limmatquai, the 2 spires on the right are part of the Grossmunster church, which you’ve seen here before. On the left is the back of Wasserkirche, yet another church. (there are plenty of churches here). On my left, but not pictured, is the Limmat River.

Thanks Ainz,
It's wonderful to get all the details. Makes your excellent photos more meaningful.

Yes, firemen here do rescue little animals all the time. In fact, you can hear the people saying, "Oohhhhhh! Poor thing!!"
